Romans: Rooted in Jesus, Secure In Christ

As Napoleon rose to power in France, he made significant changes to French law, taxes, commerce, etc. Many of his reforms would shape the nation for generations to come, especially his re-written constitution. The changes were largely appreciated by the common man, as it lowered taxation for hard working citizens and gave more equality, eliminating some of the classes in society. This raised his popularity among the French people and his vassal states. But as he conquered neighboring countries, he imposed the continental system, which limited trade to those states that neighbored each other, the states within the continent. This was intended to punish Britain, excluding them from commerce with the continent. However, excluding Britain hurt the economies of France’s vassal states, undermining Napoleon’s favor and contributing to his downfall.

The favor of man is a fickle thing. In one moment, a person’s favor can turn into disdain. In our text Sunday, Paul tells us that we can never lose the favor of God in Christ Jesus. Having presented the accomplishments of Christ for us and relaying the promises of being united to Christ, Paul now assures us that nothing can break this union. Join us Sunday as we begin the last paragraph of Romans 8 and settle into the faithfulness of God in Jesus.
